Region of Crete | Connecting Minoan Palatial Centers with Archaeological Sites

  • The Region of Crete has issued a call for action within the framework of the Integrated Spatial Investment Strategy (ISIS), with the aim of connecting the Minoan Palatial Centers with the archaeological sites in their wider zones. These interventions include the creation and upgrading of emblematic routes, enhancing accessibility, and highlighting the cultural heritage of Crete.

Improving Accessibility and Upgrading the Road Network

The strategy includes the completion and upgrading of the local road network for better connection of the archaeological sites. The main actions concern:

  • The creation of new walking routes of approximately 10 kilometers in length, which will allow visitors to explore the natural and historical heritage of the area.
  • Improving accessibility to the Minoan Palatial Centers, with projects that include traffic regulations in Knossos and upgrading the road network from the Venizelio junction to the future Knossos junction.
  • The road bypass of the settlement of Axos, to facilitate travel to areas of cultural and natural interest.

Protection and Promotion of the Cultural Reserve

Particular emphasis is placed on the protection and promotion of the Minoan Palatial Centers, such as Knossos, Phaistos, and Malia. The interventions include:

  • Improvement of infrastructure by creating new routes for the disabled, upgrading the reception buildings, and improving the existing visitor corridors.
  • Signage and architectural lighting projects to improve the visitor experience.
  • Protection and restoration of Byzantine and Venetian monuments, as well as maintenance of their decorative elements.
  • Promotion of inactive historical and listed buildings, according to the principles of Bauhaus (sustainability, aesthetics, inclusion).

Environmental Awareness and Promotion of the UNESCO Brand

The strategy also includes actions to raise the environmental awareness of the local community and promote the Minoan Civilization. These include:

  • The creation of a comprehensive network of hiking trails in UNESCO areas, with the upgrading of trails and the placement of distinctive signage.
  • The development of alternative tourism infrastructure, such as cycling routes and climbing tracks, enhances the attractiveness of semi-mountainous and mountainous areas.

The above interventions aim to increase visitor numbers, improve the tourist experience, and highlight the unique cultural and natural heritage of Crete.
