All marine areas of the Heraklion Regional Unit, both northern and southern, were characterized as suitable for swimming, following inspections by the Health Inspectors of the Heraklion Regional Unit, the results of microbiological analyses of seawater samples taken and the data resulting from the geographical distribution of monitoring points and Bathing Water Identities, as well as the monitoring of the quality of bathing water carried out at the sampling points
As the Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare of the Heraklion Regional Unit points out, swimming is still prohibited under the current legislation:
- 200 meters on either side of the mouth of the ALMYROS river channel in front of the P.E.H. in Linoperamata due to the designation of the area as a recipient of treated wastewater and the outlet of the sewage pipes of the P.E.H. and E.K.O. installations.
- 200 meters on either side of the mouth of the GIOFIROS River in Heraklion and around the mouth of the underwater pipeline of the Heraklion biological station, due to the designation of the area as a recipient of treated wastewater.
- 200 meters on either side of the area of the former slaughterhouses of Heraklion (N. Alikarnassos) due to the designation of the area as a recipient of treated wastewater and the outlet of the sewage pipe of the industrial zone biological station.
- At ship anchorages and marinas,
- In the port of Heraklion.
