The national awareness campaign SealGreece is currently in full swing, aiming to raise awareness about the protection of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus)—one of the most endangered marine mammals on the planet and an integral symbol of Greece’s marine heritage.
From July 7 to August 30, 2025, an international, intergenerational crew — Loukas, Suzanne, Nora, John, and Aran — is sailing across 18 islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas on eco-friendly sailing vessels. Their mission is to inform, engage, and mobilize local communities in support of marine life protection.
The journey began in Volos, with first stops at Skopelos and Alonissos, and will continue to islands like Lefkada, Zakynthos, Chios, Paros, and Mykonos, where specially designed educational programs are implemented in cooperation with local management units of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA).
SealGreece is a collaboration between the Monk Seal Alliance, OFYPEKA, and AegeanCargoSailing, which provides the sailboats and captains for the journey.
At each island stop, the crew meets with sailors, tourism professionals, and residents, conducting awareness activities, immersive experiences, and presentations using innovative augmented reality tools. These activities highlight the importance of marine biodiversity protection in a participatory and engaging way—especially for children and youth.
Maria Papadopoulou, President of OFYPEKA, stated:
“The Mediterranean monk seal is a rare and iconic symbol of Greece’s marine heritage. Through the SealGreece initiative, we bring together citizens, seafarers, and visitors to protect these extraordinary species and their fragile habitats for future generations.”
SealGreece is not just an awareness campaign — it’s an open call to conscious action in support of nature and marine life, through the power of storytelling, collaboration, and solidarity.
