Interventions to strengthen water supply: From Gata to Central Tzoumerka to Thermaikos

Two different regions of the country, Central Tzoumerka in Epirus and Thermaikos in Central Macedonia, are facing acute water supply problems, as a result of prolonged drought and increased consumption during the summer months. Local authorities are proceeding with emergency interventions to ensure sufficient water, employing both technical solutions and additional resources.

In particular, in the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka, it was decided to rent a machine to uncover the “Gata” spring and create a surface for the collection of spring water. This move is part of measures taken due to the increased demand for water due to the summer population increase and the long period of drought recorded in the region.

As it became known, the “Vrysi Gata” spring can strengthen the water supply network, covering the needs of the settlement of Mikrospilia, which is facing serious water supply problems. The reduction in water supply at the “Venia” water intake has led to frequent supply interruptions, which makes it necessary to supply the tanks from a new source. For this purpose, earthworks were planned using an excavator-loader, in order to uncover the source and create the appropriate infrastructure for the collection of spring water.

Similar moves to cover water supply needs are also recorded in the Thermaikos region. The Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Enterprise (DEYATH) has proceeded to transport drinking water with tanker vehicles to a tank of the Thermaikos Municipal Unit. As stated in the decision, the drop in the water table has caused a decrease in yield by approximately 30% in three existing boreholes, compared to previous years. This development is attributed to the phenomenon of water scarcity, as a result of which a private company was assigned, for an amount of 37,200 euros, to provide this service.

Water scarcity, which in recent years has increasingly affected areas of the country, burdens water infrastructure and leads to increased costs for ensuring adequate and safe water supply. Local authorities are called upon to seek immediate and long-term measures, such as strengthening sources, upgrading existing boreholes and implementing water saving policies, in order to ensure the sustainable management of this valuable natural resource.
