Santorini: New “protective shield” against natural challenges

Santorini is acquiring a new “protective shield” against natural challenges, with projects on the slopes worth 2.5 million euros, as announced in a post by the Governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Hadjimarkos.

As he points out, the first direct interventions were completed on time, in order to free up critical tourist areas and ensure the smooth operation of the island during this season. At the same time, a second project was put out to tender, with funding from the Natural Disasters Fund, which is entering the implementation phase.

The relevant contract was signed and the works will begin in September, with the aim of being completed before the start of the next tourist season. Mr. Hadjimarkos explained that it was not possible to proceed with the work in July and August, so as not to disrupt tourist activity.

According to him, after the completion of the project, a third, even larger-scale intervention will follow. “The administration should not whine but should always go beyond the limits and be where there is a need,” he emphasized.
