Municipality of Velos-Vocha: Prohibition on the use of water for swimming pools

The Municipality of Velos-Vocha (Corinth) has approved a new Water Supply Regulation, which defines in detail the conditions and limits for the use of water from the municipal water supply network. The purpose of the regulation is the rational management of drinking water, which is considered a social good that must be used wisely, in order to ensure its quality and adequacy for all consumers.

According to the new regulation, the use of water supply water for specific activities, such as filling swimming pools and irrigating gardens, watering agricultural plots and crops, as well as filling irrigation tanks, is expressly prohibited. The implementation of this prohibition is considered crucial for the preservation of the Municipality’s water reserves.

In the event of a violation of the above, the Municipality provides for the immediate interruption of the water supply to the violator, removal of the water meter and the imposition of fines. The amount of the fines is determined by a special Three-Member Water Supply Committee, which has been appointed by the municipal council and carries out on-site inspections to confirm the violations. The minimum fine is 2,000 euros. In addition, the Municipality reserves the right to take legal action against violators, if it deems it necessary.

At the same time, the Regulation sets maximum water consumption limits for the various categories of consumers. For homes with an average number of members, the limit has been set at 150 cubic meters per six months, with the possibility of an exception for large or multi-member families. For shops, livestock units, industrial facilities and crafts, the maximum limit is 900 cubic meters per six months. In the tourism sector, which is an important sector for the region, the consumption limit for hotels, guesthouses and campsites is set at 300 cubic meters per serviced double room per six-month period.

In cases where the consumption limits are exceeded, strict sanctions are provided. The first time provides for a fine equal to twice the amount of water consumed beyond the limit. In the second violation, the fine increases to five times the excess amount. In case of repeated violations, the Municipality has the right to interrupt the water supply until the consumer settles the debts.

The regulation aims to regulate and monitor water consumption, ensuring the fair distribution and protection of the region’s water resources. At the same time, the existence of clear rules and the imposition of sanctions aim to preserve the quality of life of residents and the sustainable development of local businesses, among which the tourism sector holds a special place.

The implementation of the new Water Regulation comes to adapt the region to the needs of a more stringent management of natural resources, at a time when pressure on water resources is increasing, both from the volatile climate and from growing demand.
