Skiathos is increasingly emerging as an example of an inclusive destination, combining hospitality with social sensitivity and respect for diversity. This was confirmed by the recent meeting of Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas with Patrycja Franczak and her husband Roberto Wills Lambathakis, who visited the island for the second time, noting that their choice was not accidental, as Skiathos stands out for the respect it shows to visitors with mobility problems.
The Mayor of Skiathos emphasizes in his post that accessibility is not a theoretical goal, but is already part of everyday life, emphasizing that its strengthening is not limited to technical projects, but signals a social and cultural change in mentality. “With consistency and vision, we are implementing policies that improve the quality of life of citizens with disabilities and at the same time make the island more attractive to all visitors, regardless of needs or specificities,” said the Mayor, adding that although much remains to be done, the Municipality is proud of the progress that has been achieved.
This strategy has already been recognized internationally. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) included the Municipality of Skiathos in the Accessibility Good Practice Guide, published in January 2025 and presenting 25 global examples of destinations, infrastructure and businesses that invest in innovation, inclusion and social awareness. At the same time, Skiathos was the only Municipality to participate in the UNWTO International Conference “Tourism for All”, in November 2023 in San Marino, recognizing accessibility not only as a moral obligation but also as a business opportunity.
With specific actions, Skiathos has integrated accessibility into the core of its development: it operates modern municipal transport with buses suitable for people with mobility problems, four beaches have the Seatrac system that allows autonomous access to the sea, while since 2020 the island has participated in the ExtraMilers platform, as one of the first five islands in the country that promote accessible tourism.
In collaboration with the Paths of Greece organization, a network of hiking trails adapted to the needs of everyone has been formed, with special care for an accessible route in Koukounaries and a new bridge in the same area. Finally, the Municipality has proceeded with the construction of ramps in public spaces, schools and municipal buildings, while even the Medieval Castle under restoration has been provided with access for people with disabilities.
