The preparation for the assignment of the conservation service for the historic Pausanias Plane Tree on Aigio beach, the particularly beautiful natural monument that adorns the city’s port area, is nearing completion.
The company “PROGETTO VERDE DI GIOVANNI MORELLI” based in Italy, which specializes internationally in similar projects, is already following all the standard bureaucratic procedures, so that the work can begin at the beginning of the new year.
According to the technical description of the project, the study of which has been prepared by the competent Department of Greening of the Municipality of Aigialeia, the company’s arborists will follow a specific arboricultural and agronomic management program that will aim both at the gradual improvement of the stability of the Pausanias Plane Tree, as well as at the improvement of its biological conditions. Among the works that will be carried out are restoration pruning with a mixed technique of using ropes and a platform, treatment of the area explored by the roots with the aim of improving them, as well as partial filling and upgrading of the cavities of the trunk with natural materials. Agronomic interventions are also planned for the other two plane trees that grow east of the historic tree. It is characteristic that in order to calculate the stability of the trees, the use of a special tomograph is planned for the analysis of the structure of the wood.
“This is a project of particular importance for the rescue and upgrading of the Pausanias Plane Tree, which is a rare jewel for our region and we must treat it as such, so that it remains strong in the future. That is why we are leveraging our collaboration with a specialized company, with scientists who have visited our region and have the know-how and the appropriate modern means, so that in collaboration with local professionals, they can carry out this mission,” notes in his statements the president of the Municipal Port Fund of Aigialeia, Mr. Andreas Economou.
Moreover, in parallel with the work in Platanos, the budget for 2026 will include the corresponding amount of money for the maintenance of the lighting lamps along the entire length of the port area of Aigio, while the planning of the cleaning, upgrading and reopening of the 12 Vryses, as well as the regeneration of the surrounding area, is at an advanced stage. These are some of the initiatives that will give a new, fresh image to one of the most beautiful parts of the city of Aigio and that locals and visitors will enjoy.
