A programmatic agreement was signed between the Hellenic Agency for Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) and the Municipality of Lavreotiki, concerning the funding and implementation of actions to showcase geosites and mining heritage sites, as well as initiatives for the promotion and awareness of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Lavreotiki.
The total budget of the agreement amounts to €120,000 and is fully funded by OFYPEKA, with a duration of twelve months from the signing. The agreement was signed by OFYPEKA CEO Kostas Triantis and the Mayor of Lavreotiki, Dimitris Loukas, who is also the president of the Geopark authority, in the presence of OFYPEKA Chair Maria Papadopoulou and the scientific coordinator of the Lavreotiki Geopark, Evgenia Moraiti.
The actions focus on two main axes, aiming at the organized enhancement of the visitor experience and the promotion of the historical and natural identity of the Geopark. Among the planned interventions are works in the Mining Gallery 80 in Plaka and the creation of a 3D model of the detachment fault in the Avlaki – Porto Ennia area, providing visitors with a documented and modern interpretation of the geological history.
The program also includes the construction of viewing stations, installation of informational signage, production of educational and environmental interpretation materials, and the provision of equipment for educational activities and the promotion of the Geopark.
At the same time, the agreement strengthens institutional cooperation between OFYPEKA and the Municipality of Lavreotiki, reinforcing the path toward a more integrated and sustainable management of the area’s geological and mining heritage.
