Southern Pelion Municipality says “no” to wind farms, citing environmental and tourism impact

The Municipality of Southern Pelion has reiterated its firm opposition to the construction and operation of wind farms in the area, emphasizing that its stance remains unchanged against investments that, according to the municipal authority, threaten the natural landscape, local economy, and the tourism identity of the region.

Specifically, the municipality’s position concerns planned installations in the Municipal Units of Argalasti and Sipias, areas characterized by high tourist activity, numerous accommodations, and proximity to protected zones. These locations are closely tied to Pelion’s natural landscape and constitute a key pillar of the local tourism product.

The municipality stresses that the installation of wind farms would cause significant impacts not only on the environment but also on livestock farming and the overall image of the area as a mild, nature-oriented destination. The tourism development of Southern Pelion, it notes, relies on preserving the landscape and authenticity, elements considered incompatible with large-scale energy infrastructure.

Additionally, the municipal authority points out that the lands in question have not been allocated for such uses, and protecting municipal property remains a central priority. This reaffirmation follows the submission of new information regarding the project plans, prompting the municipality to issue a unified and clear statement.

The message to the market and stakeholders is clear: Southern Pelion chooses a development model that prioritizes the protection of natural capital and sustainable tourism activity, maintaining its position against interventions that would alter the character of the region.

The municipality aims to ensure consistency in land-use planning and a clear definition of the area’s development direction.
