Oichalia, Trikala: Municipality blocks plans for cycling route on railway network

The Municipal Council of Oichalia has issued a protest resolution regarding the proposed cycling route along the Corinth–Tripoli–Kalamata railway line, while simultaneously expressing its support for the prospect of reactivating the railway.

Specifically, the resolution notes that the existing railway line constitutes a unified and technically exploitable network, currently suspended but equipped with renovated infrastructure, a maintenance depot and rolling stock. According to the municipality, these features allow for its immediate reactivation, provided that a relevant decision and planning process is initiated by the competent authorities.

The decision emphasizes that the reopening of the railway is viewed as an option with multiple dimensions, linked to sustainable mobility, reducing road traffic and lowering the environmental footprint. It also highlights the role the network could play in improving inland accessibility and connecting the region with essential services and key infrastructure.

Particular reference is made to the railway’s importance for the broader development prospects of the area, as—according to the Municipality’s position—it could complement tourism and local economic activities, serving resident and visitor movements to key destinations across the Peloponnese.

Through the resolution, the Municipal Council calls on the State, OSE, and all competent bodies to evaluate the possibilities of restarting the railway network within the existing framework, also expressing the Municipality’s willingness to participate in the dialogue and planning concerning the future of railway transport in the region.

Finally, the issue is placed within a wider discussion about the planning of transport infrastructure at regional level. The Municipality stresses the need for clear direction and coordination among all stakeholders, ensuring that any interventions serve long-term goals of development and connectivity.
