Shareholders have officially approved Lufthansa’s takeover of Italian airline ITA Airways at a company meeting. In addition, Lufthansa CEO J?rg Eberhart has been appointed as ITA’s new CEO.
J?rg Eberhart, 54, has been responsible for the strategic development of the Lufthansa Group as Head of Strategy & Organizational Development since 2021 and was CEO of the Italian subsidiary LH Air Dolomiti from 2014 to 2021.
Lufthansa announced earlier this week that it had completed the long-negotiated deal with Alitalia’s successor airline.
Under the contract with the Italian government, the Lufthansa Group will initially acquire 41% of ITA’s shares for 325 million euros with the option to later take over the airline in full for a total of 829 million euros.
It is recalled that Lufthansa had expressed interest in ITA in early 2022. After lengthy negotiations, an agreement in principle was reached in 2023. The EU Commission gave the green light for entry in July of the same year, but demanded certain concessions to maintain competition. The two partners finally reached an agreement in November and Brussels also gave the green light in early December.

In the new five-member Board of Directors of ITA Airways, the Italian Ministry of Finance (in addition to J?rg Eberhart) also appointed Lorenza Maggio, 47 years old (photo with J?rg Eberhart), who has been Vice President of Sales EMEA Lufthansa Group Airlines since January 2024.
