The new electronic ticket system will be fully implemented on all three lines of the Athens metro and electric railway (lines 1, 2 and 3), with the closure of the automated ticket barriers at all stations by March 15, the Athens public transport organisation OASA announced on Thursday, ANA reports.
According to OASA, more than 540,000 photocards have been issued so far, while 45,000 photocards have been issued to disabled persons and the unemployed. All applications made via the www.athenacard.gr website have been processed and sent off, while new applications are now processed without any delays, the transport company announced .
After March 5, eligibility for free travel will be certified via a special app on the www.idika.gr site, where the relevant fields must be filled in, after which the free fares can be “loaded” through the ticket machines. Disabled and unemployed persons eligible for discount travel that have not yet received a photocard are urged to apply online or at stations that issue photocards.
