Surface damage repair works on Lambrakis bridge in Piraeus have now started by Attiko Metro, according to a report by ypodomes.com.
The project was launched after the concern that had been created concerning its condition and capacity to withstand the loads of the Tram itineraries on a daily basis after the operation of the extension.
According to a decision by Attiko Metro, the works regard the restoration of the image of Lambrakis Bridge in order to reassure both the Municipality of Piraeus and Attica Region that had sent letters from September to December on the subject.
The repair works, that began a few days ago, have been awarded to THEMELI constructions company, while a specialized company called “Epidomos” has been appointed as a subcontractor. The project regarding the restoration and maintenance of Lambrakis Bridge will be implemented under the supervision of an independent inspection and certification body, and more specifically, by T?V AUSTRIA HELLAS, in order for the quality and approved methodology of the related works to be ensured.
For the static adequacy of Lambraki Bridge, questions had been previously addressed in the Greek Parliament, nevertheless, Attiko Metro has reassured that the bridge is strong enough as all relevant studies have been carried out.
Lambrakis Bridge was constructed in the 1960s. As there was visible surface damage on the bridge after the construction works for the extension of the Tramway in Piraeus, there has been a provision for targeted restoration where the concrete had been worn out and the reinforcement had been revealed. Construction works are expected to be completed by the end of Spring.
