The tram service linking Athens to the port of Piraeus that is undergoing works won’t open on Feb. 17 as scheduled and now has been pushed back at least until the beginning of March because of further problems.
The service goes straight to the heart of Athens in Syntagma Square but Kathimerini said work has been delayed for repositioning the tramlines in the Neo Faliro s part of an ongoing overhaul of the bay on Athens’ southern coast.
Also pending is an inspection of the stretch of the line between Kasomouli Street in the Athens neighborhood of Neos Cosmos and Syntagma, which was shut down in October 2018 over worries that the ground beneath the tracks, over the covered-over Ilisos River was at some risk of falling in.
The inspection is expected to determine whether earlier worries were correct if the new Attica Regional Authority will have to carry out structural improvements. The project to reposition the tracks in Faliro, meanwhile, will take up to five months, the report added, with delays a common problem in almost every aspect of the Greek government.
