Greek Transport and Infrastructure Minister Kostas Karamanlis became one of the first passengers to ride on a Thessaloniki metro train, which on Wednesday carried out its first test run with passengers on board, ANA reports.
The train moved on the test tracks at the Pylea depot and covered a few hundred meters with passengers rather than just Attiko Metro staff, among them the transport ministry Secretary-General Giorgos Karagiannis, members of the Attiko Metro board, and executives of the construction company, Hitachi. The 60-meter-long train had four carriages of 15 meters each and moved at about 7 km per hour on the test track (during normal operation it will reach 80 km per hour). The test runs started a month ago, the president of Attiko Metro Nikos Tahiaos told Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
