Snow disrupts public transport in Greek capital of Athens

The heavy snowfall in Attica has disrupted the operation of public transport on Tuesday, including the metro system, ANA reports.

On the Athens metro, Line 1 (Piraeus-Kifissia), which is partly above ground, shut down while Line 3 (blue line) runs to Doukissis Plakentias station, where passengers going to the Athens International Airport must then transfer here to the Proastiakos (suburban) railway trains to complete their journey.

Buses and trolley services are operating only in the southern suburbs of Athens, with vehicles recalled as a safety precaution due to the icy conditions on Tuesday morning.

Vass. Sofias reopens

On Tuesday afternoon, Athens’ major street Vassilissis Sofias reopened to traffic near Syntagma Square, following the removal of a tree that fell following heavy snow.

National road network

The Athens-Lamia national highway (Attica section) will be closed down to 07:00 on Wednesday, instead of the original shutdown to 19:00 on Tuesday. The Attica section includes Kalyftakis Bridge in Kifissia to the borders with Viotia (Boeotia) prefecture. Travel from Viotia onwards will be open.

In addition, traffic was restored on Tuesday at the old Athens-Corinth national highway and the Megara-Alepohori highway at 16:30 the same day shut down because of the snowstorm.

In the first case, traffic was banned between the 28th and 34th kilometers in both directions, while in the Megara-Alepohori case traffic was interrupted between the 5th km and Alepohori, both due to heavy snowfall.

Ferries still docked

Ferries remained docked at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrion for another day on Tuesday, as the high winds that reached up to 10 on the Beaufort scale at the Aegean Sea on Monday continued for a second day.

Port authorities also extended a sailing ban for the Agia Marina-Nea Stira schedule.

On Monday, sailings in the Argosaronic Gulf were allowed only in closed-type boats.

Passengers were advised to contact local port authorities and travel agencies for other cancellations.
