Greece might have a rightful reputation as being a difficult, and often dangerous place to drive. However, the Mediterranean country was the only EU member to reduce road fatalities by more than 50% in 2020 compared to 2010, greekcitytimes.com reports.
The improvement to the country’s road network, the increase in road safety, the driver assistance systems in modern cars, and a better driving culture led to a drop in the number of fatal traffic accidents.
According to data from the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA), there were 54 deaths from traffic accidents per million inhabitants in Greece in 2020, representing a decrease of over half (54%) compared with 2010 (113 deaths).
Thus, the country “broke free” from its penultimate position as one of the most dangerous countries for driving and climbed eight places higher, ahead of Croatia, Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria, Latvia, and Romania.
