“There is significant progress, which is obviously encouraging. We are also seeing disbursements of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Fund,” stated Christos Staikouras, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, during his visit to construction sites of the North Crete Highway (BOAK). He noted that this advancement in such an important project for Crete is largely attributed to the dedication of the contractor companies, which have even begun renting additional spaces to ensure work can proceed smoothly.
Staikouras visited locations where both the public works section and the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project are underway. He emphasized that the commencement and acceleration of these projects motivate everyone involved to work even harder to overcome challenges, facilitate expropriations, and address various concerns raised by the private sector. The goal is to open even more fronts in the coming months and complete the project much sooner than previously estimated.
Accompanied by ministry officials, the regional governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, New Democracy MP for Heraklion, Maximos Senetakis, and local party representatives, Staikouras received updates on the projects from contractor representatives. He mentioned that he plans to return to Crete soon, especially in light of the upcoming contracting of the Chania-Heraklion section and the option for Kissamos.
