Ionian road extension to Kakavia boosts connectivity and road safety in Greece

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras, during the signing of the contract for the project “Extension of the Ionian Road – Ioannina-Kakavias Section,” stressed that the project has a crucial character on the map of Greece’s road axes, ANA reports.

Staikouras, in his speech, noted the benefits of constructing the new highway, approximately 70 kilometers long, which serves as the natural extension of the Ionian Road and the westernmost vertical axis of the Egnatia Road.

“It is a project of cross-border significance, as it essentially extends and connects the two highways that currently run through Western and Northern Greece, reaching the Greek-Albanian border,” he said. He also emphasized that it will offer more opportunities for a better quality of life for citizens and “will improve the level of road safety on a difficult route, which experiences high traffic congestion.”

It is a project with high technical requirements, which includes, among other things, 12 interchanges, 5 bridges, 1 tunnel, as well as 5 overpasses and 25 underpasses.

The budget amounts to approximately 310 million euros and has been included in the “Transport 2021-2027” Program of the National Strategic Reference Framework 2021-2027 (NSRF).
