The progress of construction of the Patras – Pyrgos motorway has now exceeded 77%, stated the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas at the “Regional Growth Conference” on the topic: “Sustainable Infrastructure: A Guide to Survival in the Amidst the Climate Crisis”, which is taking place in Patras.
Mr. Dimas earlier inspected the construction sites of the motorway together with the Secretary General of Infrastructure, Dimitris Anagnopoulos, where they were informed about the progress of the works along the entire length of the contracts. Subsequently, Mr. Dimas spoke at the Regional Growth Conference, where, when asked about the progress of the highway construction, he stated:
“Patras – Pyrgos, at the moment, is perhaps the most immediate priority of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. I had the opportunity to conduct another inspection today, starting from Pyrgos. The plan is for the first 65 kilometers, starting from Pyrgos and going north, to be delivered by July 31. The remaining 10 km to reach Patras by the end of November. At the moment, the overall maturity of the project is at 77%. Some sections are at 97%, meaning the signs or fencing are missing. Some sections need a little more work, but the contractors are optimistic that on July 31 it will be delivered normally to traffic.”
The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport also referred to the positive results of the road safety interventions implemented on the said road axis until the new motorway is completed. As he said, “With the pilot measures implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in Patras – Pyrgos since December 2023, we have a spectacular reduction in road accidents. They have proven to have saved lives, and this is what is required for road safety. We are also planning similar road safety measures on VOAK, another motorway, where many road accidents occur”.
Asked about the Pyrgos – Kalo Nero – Tsakona road, Mr. Dimas replied: “It is in the planning of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Government. We are studying some alternatives, and once we deliver the first 65 km of Patras – Pyrgos, we will be able to discuss specifically with the European Commission so that we can move forward with our planning.”
