Kefalonia: New Airport – Krania Road

By decision of the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepeklis, the Construction of the Airport – Krania Road Axis, with a budget of 7.88 million euros, was included in the “Ionian Islands 2021-2027” program. The project, approximately six kilometers long, will directly connect Kefalonia Airport with the Argostoli-Poros provincial road, bypassing the urban fabric of Argostoli. According to Mr. Trepeklis, this project will improve the daily life of residents and visitors to the island.

Specifically, the new alignment is expected to decongest the existing Argostoli-Lassi-Airport route, significantly reduce travel times to tourist areas such as Skala and Poros, and improve road safety for permanent residents and travelers with rental vehicles. At the same time, it facilitates the connection of the airport with the main road arteries of the island (Argostoli-Sami, Argostoli-Fiskardo), creating a unified network of access to popular beaches and mountain settlements.

The project includes studies, expropriations, removal of utility networks, and archaeological self-assessment. Its completion is estimated to enhance the sustainability of local tourism, extending the season and making the island more attractive for international flights and organized travel packages. In combination with other interventions by the Region, the airport-Krania axis forms modern transport infrastructure, a foundation for stable tourism development, and an upgraded experience for visitors and residents, as the Region emphasizes.
