AKTOR Group | The Aktio – Agios Nikolaos – Lefkada section is now open to traffic

The AKTOR Group of Companies has opened the new Aktio – Agios Nikolaos – Lefkada road section, approximately 10 km long, to traffic ahead of schedule, in order to accommodate the increased traffic ahead of the August 15th holiday. The new road connection improves Lefkada’s access to the national road network and Aktio Airport, offering greater road safety and faster connectivity.

This is the largest part of the project “Construction – Upgrading of the road connection of Lefkada city with the Aktio – Western Axis road axis and construction of the new Lefkada water supply pipeline in the involved sections”, with a budget of €48 million, which is being implemented by the AKTOR Group and is in full swing.

On the occasion of the handover, the Group’s Chairman and CEO, Alexandros Exarchou, underlined that “reliability is the top value” for the company, noting that the commitment to the Ministry of Infrastructure was to deliver the project in early August – a goal that was achieved earlier, thanks to the intensive work of the crews.

The project includes two main sections:

  • Vonitsa – Lefkada (16 km)
  • Aktio – Agios Nikolaos (5 km)

On the Vonitsa – Lefkada section the speed limit will be 90 km/h, while on the Aktio – Agios Nikolaos section it will be 80 km/h. The main road is 11 meters wide, with one lane in each direction, and includes a total of 7 level junctions, parallel roads, technical works and the Cleopatra Canal bridge.

At the same time, the completion of the second section, Agios Nikolaos – Vonitsa (6 km), which will close the transport circuit between Lefkada and Western Sterea, is progressing, as well as the construction of the new 8 km long water pipeline, which will cover the needs of residents and visitors for the coming decades.

The project is being implemented with respect for the natural environment and cultural heritage, as it passes through protected areas and archaeological sites, while it is expected to function as an important development lever for Lefkada and the wider region.
