Freenow: Sword, komboloi, and… scooter among strangest items forgotten in Greek taxis

From mobile phones and keys to… an air force sword and bags of pellets for rabbits. Freenow’s new annual list reveals what passengers leave behind in Greek taxis and what this says about our daily life.

As the year draws to a close, Freenow by Lyft reveals the items forgotten in taxis by passengers over the last 12 months. The annual record offers an interesting snapshot of everyday commuting, capturing habits, life rhythms and unexpected little stories that remain on the back seat.

In the European ranking, Greece is in 4th place this year with more than 2,000 reported forgotten items, after Ireland, Germany and Spain. Fast-paced routines, intense urban mobility and numerous daily obligations appear to contribute to the frequency with which passengers leave something behind in the taxi.

In Greece, the items most frequently forgotten reflect modern daily life: mobile phones, keys, various small objects, bags and earphones make up the top five most common losses. Mobile phones remain firmly at the top, confirming that a few rushed seconds are enough for them to continue the ride on their own. Keys and bags also show that Greeks still move around carrying many items, especially during peak hours.

The most unusual finds of the year

Beyond the ordinary, Freenow’s annual record also includes findings that stand out for their uniqueness and the story they carry. Among them:

  • A white and gold sword with a note from the Greek Air Force, perhaps the most impressive find of the year.
  • A large bag of pellets for a rabbit, showing that pet responsibilities can also fit into Freenow rides.
  • A yellow amber komboloi, which could easily be part of a collection.
  • A military assignment order, one of the most personal and unexpected documents found in a taxi.
  • A scooter, likely a sign that the passenger combined transport modes, using a taxi for most of the journey and a scooter for the last mile.

To reunite even more items with their owners, Freenow allows passengers to contact the driver through the app for up to 7 days after the ride (the connection is secure, with a hidden line and encrypted number).

Additionally, passengers who wish to search for a forgotten item can do so through Freenow once their ride is completed, via their ride history and by submitting an immediate report for the ride during which the item was forgotten.
