Barcelona: Large cruise ship visits spark protests

Barcelona is a particularly popular destination for foreign tourists this year, attracting numerous large cruise ships.

This, however, does not satisfy a portion of its residents who are opposed to the increase in the number of tourists and cruise ships.

Recently, the port of Barcelona was approached by the Harmony of the Seas, with a capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,300 crew members, in essence a small town with casino, theater, 20 restaurants and four swimming pools.

The environmental initiative Ecologistas en Acci?n was not thrilled by the cruise ship’s visit and organized a protesting event believing that this huge ship was devastating to the environment and the sea.

In Barcelona there is a general turmoil around tourism, apartments rented to tourists, new hotels, the lively nightlife, the half-naked people in the bars, the queues in souvenir shops and  the cruise ships that bring multitudes of  tourists.

Almost half of the residents who were surveyed, believe that after years of development there must be a substantial restriction on tourist arrivals.

In 2015, around 9 million tourists visited the city with at least one overnight stay. Last year, 2.7 million cruise passengers arrived.

A city of 1.6 million inhabitants, according to those who complain, can not withstand such numbers of tourists and therefore, restrictions seem unavoidable.
