- Initiative of the Association of Cruise Ship Owners & Shipping Operators (EEKFN)
Against the backdrop of the need to strengthen the infrastructure and the experience of cruise passengers, a meeting was held in Santorini at the initiative of the Association of Cruise Ship Owners & Shipping Operators (EEKFN). The meeting was attended by representatives of the cruise companies, the Governor of Thira, the Mayor, the President of the Port Fund, the Harbor Master, the President of the Thira Commercial Association and the presidency of the Thira Boat Owners Association.
Passenger service is a key issue
The meeting’s agenda focused on issues related to the smooth service of passengers arriving on the island via cruise ships, at a time when seismic activity has brought restrictions on the use of the old port (Gialos).
Disembarkation management and flow control
The implementation of the berth allocation system and the need to continue the limitation measure (cap) on the number of disembarking passengers were discussed, with the aim of decongesting access points and upgrading the tourist experience.
New cable car: a modern solution for a modern problem
Particular emphasis was placed on the need to build a new, modern cable car with increased transport capacity. This project will contribute significantly to reducing the waiting time of visitors in the port area, as well as to protecting them from weather conditions, which are worsening due to climate change. At the same time, it will reduce the need to disembark passengers at Athinios, offering autonomy in their transport to Fira and other destinations. The operation of the new facility will also boost the income of the foundation that will manage it.
Boat maintenance: towards a “greener” cruise
Another critical point raised is the need to repair and maintain the four boats. Upgrading these infrastructures will facilitate the docking of small and medium-sized cruise ships near the old port, reducing disembarkation time and limiting air pollutants, as the ships will not need to keep their engines running. In addition, the provision of the relevant service will generate income for the Port Fund.
EEKFN on the side of local communities
As was emphasized during the meeting, EEKFN is the only national body representing the cruise industry and has many years of experience, knowing the country’s port infrastructure in depth. With regular visits to destinations such as Santorini, the body promotes measures that enhance the development of the sector, with respect for the needs of local communities.
Solidarity and cooperation for the future of cruising
The meeting took place in a particularly positive atmosphere, while the necessity of immediately promoting all planned infrastructure projects was confirmed. Representatives of both sides underlined the importance of cooperation between providers and users, with a decisive role for the Boat Owners’ Union, especially in this transitional period after the recent earthquakes.
