Dynamic recovery and rise of cruises in Volos

Volos is gradually establishing itself as one of the most important cruise destinations in the Mediterranean, recording an impressive rise in 2025. According to official data from the Volos Port Authority (OPA), from the beginning of the year until September 12, 25 cruise ships have docked, carrying a total of 39,758 passengers. This number already exceeds the total number of the best year of the last decade, while 16 more arrivals are expected by the end of 2025.

This positive development is directly linked to the rehabilitation and deepening of the port infrastructure, following the 2023 floods, as well as to the targeted international activity of the CEO of the Hellenic Port Authority, Socrates Anagnostou. Mr. Anagnostou participated in Seatrade Europe 2025, the most important international event for the cruise industry, which took place from 10 to 12 September in Hamburg, creating crucial contacts with major companies in the sector.

As he noted, “From the data I already have at my disposal, I estimate that 2026 will be an even better year, with more cruise ship arrivals in Volos. Volos has all the guarantees to become a safe and attractive tourist destination.”

In the context of enhancing the tourism promotion of Thessaly, the OLV is currently running a fam trip with representatives of cruise companies until September 19, 2025. This initiative is supported by the Region of Thessaly and the Municipality of Volos and aims to highlight the natural and cultural advantages of the region. Participants will have the opportunity to visit Magnesia and the Sporades and get to know the beauties of the region firsthand, in order to promote Thessaly as a top cruise destination.
