Milestone for Agios Nikolaos: Largest Cruise Ship Ever Berths Following Infrastructure Upgrades

A historic milestone was reached today in Agios Nikolaos, as the port welcomed the largest cruise ship it has ever received. Following recent micro-infrastructure upgrades, including the installation of two new bollards with capacities of 200 tons and 150 tons, the luxury cruise ship Explora I (248 meters in length, 63,900 gross tons, 900 passengers) successfully berthed at Pier 1.

With this development, Agios Nikolaos now officially enters a new category of ports capable of accommodating vessels up to 250 meters, significantly strengthening its position in the Eastern Mediterranean cruise market.

“This achievement is not just about infrastructure. It is a strong lesson in strategy and determination,” said Ioannis Bras, CEO of Five Senses Consulting and Seatrade Ambassador. “The right guidance, based on detailed infrastructure assessments and trend analysis, can expand a port’s capabilities and unlock new opportunities. Our role is to recommend the right cruise lines, represent destinations at B2B meetings and trade events, and ensure our clients are fully prepared for sustainable growth.”

The arrival of the luxury Explora I marks another important milestone for Agios Nikolaos and sets the stage for the port’s next strategic step: homeporting operations.

Dimitris Agapitos, Chairman of the Agios Nikolaos Port Authority, stated:
“We are very pleased with today’s visit of Explora I, which marks a new era for the port and the destination of Agios Nikolaos. Together, we continue the upgrades so that we can host two large vessels simultaneously, one of 250 meters and one of 220 meters.”

With continuous improvements and targeted promotion, Agios Nikolaos is steadily evolving into a boutique cruise destination of international standards, capable of offering both sufficient capacity and high-quality experiences.
