The case of the coastal ferry isolation of Kythnos seems to be closed with a substantial solution, as the connection with Piraeus is being restored, a development that – as is becoming clear – would not have been launched without the persistent pressure of the residents. The protests that we recorded in Tornos News seem to have taken hold, demonstrating in practice the power of local communities when they raise issues of vital importance.
At this point, it should be emphasized that the reopening of the Piraeus-Kythnos line was announced by the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Vasilis Kikilias, who explained that, despite the fact that this particular line is not characterized as barren and therefore does not fall under a state subsidy regime, there was direct consultation with the ferry company in order to provide an immediate solution.
The new routes start next Friday and will operate every Friday and Sunday, in addition to the five already existing routes from Lavrio. In practice, Kythnos regains access to the largest port in the country, ensuring smoother travel for permanent residents, professionals and visitors.
At the same time, this development confirms that public debate and highlighting problems – as we did in a recent report – contribute substantially to the formulation of solutions with a direct social impact.
