PPA: Readiness Exercise to Handle Pollution Incidents at the Port of Piraeus

Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA) conducted, once again this year, a readiness exercise for responding to maritime and land-based pollution incidents within the central port facilities, specifically in the Passenger Shipping Area (Gate E7).

The primary purpose of this exercise is to update knowledge and gain specialized experience, both for PPA S.A. personnel and port users, for the effective activation and implementation of the Marine and Land Pollution Response Plan. Additionally, during the exercise, the available and fully operational equipment for dealing with pollution incidents was presented. The exercise was carried out in collaboration with PPA S.A.’s specialized contractor responsible for implementing the “ANTIPOLLUTION ANE” Plan, and in the presence of the competent port authority.

It is emphasized that environmental protection and preventive measures constitute a core pillar of the strategy through which the company implements its plan for further modernization and development of the Port of Piraeus. In this context, PPA S.A. carries out numerous environmental projects and initiatives that help prevent environmental incidents and establish a comprehensive preventive approach to modern environmental challenges.

The CEO of PPA S.A., Mr. Su Xudong, expressed his warm gratitude to the personnel for the flawless and successful completion of the exercise, emphasizing that continuous and systematic preparation is a fundamental factor for the effective management of potential emergency incidents. As he noted, targeted training and regular drills create the necessary conditions for immediate response and high-level operational readiness.

Furthermore, Mr. Su Xudong highlighted that the Port of Piraeus is developing with full commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, steadily creating the conditions to serve as a modern, competitive, and exemplary green port.

After the completion of the exercise, a special evaluation report is prepared, documenting the results of the exercise and any points for improvement to achieve the optimal level of operational readiness.
