The Greek government approved on Wednesday the environmental terms for the operation of a waterway in the Aegean Sea island of Patmos.
On the occasion of the signature of the decision of the environmental conditions for the construction and operation of the waterway, Patmos Mayor Gregory Stoϊkos said “Patmos waterway is the first to be granted an environmental permit in the Dodecanese and the Aegean Sea. Its operation is now feasible after the governmental approval providing a solution to the problems of our connection with the rest of Greece. Seaplane activity can give impetus to the tourism industry of the island, create new jobs and provide air transportation, both for the island’s inhabitants and tourists ‘
Hellenic Seaplanes Chairman and CEO Nicolas Charalambous underlined that “this is a project of national importance, and we will soon have a viable waterways network in place that will give a new impetus to the connectedness of Greece, and added that “our company has already started procedures for licensing, construction and operation of waterways along the coasts, on islands and at lakes, which will soon be interconnected via seaplane services.”
The company’s General Director Vangelis Zagorakis announced that “The construction of waterways will start very soon and the operation of a large number of water airports will be feasible within 2016. An important factor is the economic environment of the country and the overall investment climate that will trigger a new development landscape in Greece.”
Over 50 waterways across Greece are currently in the process of gaining authorization to proceed and if all goes according to schedule, within 2016, tourists as well as local residents will be able to fly in many Greek destinations with hydroplanes.
