At least 66 dead in hotel fire at Turkish ski resort

At least 66 people have died in a fire at a popular Turkish ski hotel in Kartalkaya.

The fire broke out at the Grand Kartal Hotel at 03:27 local time on Tuesday, with the resort full of ski enthusiasts.

It took 12 hours to put out the fire, while four people, including the owner, have been arrested, the justice minister reportedly said.

The resort is in the Bolu mountains, an area of ??northwestern Turkey popular with skiers from Istanbul and the capital Ankara, which is about 105 miles away.

The 12-story hotel was operating at full capacity, with a significant number of guests (234 people), many of them students, due to the school holidays.

Footage circulating in Turkey shows bed sheets hanging from windows, which were used by those trying to escape the burning building.

Sky News reported that other hotels in the resort were evacuated as a precaution and guests were transferred to hotels around Bolu.

A team of six government-appointed prosecutors is investigating how the fire started.
