Municipality of Aegina: Purchase of a plot of land for the creation of a parking lot, playground and field

The Municipality of Aegina is proceeding with the direct purchase of a plot of land with a total area of 3,612.68 sq m., for a price of 400,000 euros, with the aim of creating new communal infrastructure in the coastal settlement of Souvala. The purchase concerns a property located within the residential area of the Municipal Community of Vathea, in an area that is highly developed in terms of tourism and commerce, with significant traffic and increased service needs for both residents and visitors.

In particular, the plot is considered unique in terms of its location and characteristics, as it is the only available property that can be utilized for the needs that have been identified in the area. It is located a short distance from the port of Souvala, which during the summer season operates as a service point for ferry boats, but also as a shelter for fishing boats. A multitude of businesses are active in the area, while traffic during the summer months is significantly burdened, with the population of the settlements of Souvala and Agion jumping from approximately 2,500 permanent residents to more than 10,000.

Given the recent reconstruction of the coastal avenue and the planned traffic regulations, the need for an organized parking area is now imperative. The use of the plot as an outdoor parking lot on an area of 1.5 acres is expected to relieve traffic congestion, facilitate the operation of the port and businesses, and offer practical solutions for both residents and tourists.

At the same time, the remaining part of the plot is proposed to be used for the creation of a 250 sq.m. playground and a 510 sq.m. basketball court, with the aim of strengthening public recreational and sports areas in the area. Today, the settlements of Souvala and Agion do not have corresponding infrastructure, as a result of which this specific intervention covers existing and long-standing deficits in infrastructure that concern the daily lives of families, children and young people.

The Technical Service of the Municipality of Aegina has the experience and know-how to implement the required interventions, from the initial design and technical studies to the configuration and construction of the planned facilities, in full compliance with the technical and environmental specifications. The possibility of financing the project through national or European programs is also being examined, as the relevant administrative and technical capacity for the preparation of comprehensive files has already been developed.

The decision to purchase the plot of land responds to real needs and is part of a broader plan to improve the quality of life in Aegina. This is an investment with a clearly social character, which will enhance the sustainability of the Souvala waterfront, ensure accessibility, functionality and recreation, and offer residents and visitors a multifunctional, welcoming and humane public space.
