Amorgos | Reactions to the major expansion plan for the port of Katapola

The plan to expand the port of Katapola is causing strong reactions in the local community of Amorgos, despite the fact that the island already has two operational ports, in Katapola and Aegiali. The project, which according to the studies mainly serves the approach of cruise ships, is considered by many to be disproportionate to the scale of the settlement and the natural environment.

The final study was presented in March 2024 and was included in the 17 port projects of strategic importance of the Ministry of Shipping, with financing through HRADF. The plan also includes a new ring road in Katapola. However, in the public consultation, out of the 338 comments submitted, 328 expressed complete opposition. Despite the general negative attitude, the mayor of Amorgos Lefteris Karaiskos stated that “the project will proceed normally”, claiming that the reactions come from a small minority.

Particularly sharp was the position of the emeritus professor of Classical Archaeology Lila Marangou, who spoke of “dishonoring the land and the sea”, recalling that Katapola is identified with the ancient port of Minoan and hosts important archaeological remains on its seabed. Accordingly, Anna Gavala, president of the Katapola Association, pointed out that the port needs small improvements and better organization, but not an extensive intervention that alters the scale of the place.

At the same time, the new Open City Spatial and Housing Organization Plan (SCHOOAP) of the Municipality foresees a series of major interventions: port expansions, a new marina in Aegiali, the opening of 15 new roads, extensive residential expansions and the creation of an airport. These provisions have intensified the concerns of residents and friends of the island, who fear an uncontrolled “development” course. Three appeals have already been filed with the Council of State.

For the opponents, Amorgos does not need oversized port and tourist infrastructure, but a gentle improvement of the existing facilities with respect for history, the landscape and the real needs of society.
