The Ministry of Digital Governance decided to include the act entitled, Organization, digital management and promotion of the cultural reserve of the Network of Museums and Visitable Monuments of the Holy Metropolis of Rhodes, in the Digital Transformation 2021-2027 program.
In particular, the Holy Metropolis of Rhodes has a remarkable experience of more than a decade in the preservation and maintenance of movable and immovable monuments and the establishment of a network of their management, which in its full development will include 14 museums and 9 important visitable monuments scattered in a radiating shape, throughout the island.
The planning and partial implementation of the Metropolitan network began in 2010 and has been presented as a good practice in various conferences and programs of the European Commission at the Greek and European levels. An important aspect of its strategy is the utilization of cutting-edge technologies and the capabilities of modern personal devices, as well as educational actions of a digital background, which aims, in addition to the protection and promotion of relics, to transform the visit to the network nodes into a “multi-channel” experiential entertainment, making unknown cultural resources universally accessible free of charge, fulfilling the statutory purposes of recording and promoting the treasures of the Orthodox Tradition by every modern means.
An important repository of knowledge, history, and culture
A central core in the design and development of this project is the formation of a comprehensive digital repository of knowledge, history, and culture, encompassing all aspects of the Religious cultural reserve of the Network of Christian Museums & Visitable Monuments of Rhodes. This repository will be digitally available and electronically accessible via the internet, with respect for the religious character of the relics and monuments, the historical memory, and the cultural heritage of the island. To complete the project, among other things, digitization, systematic electronic documentation, and production of digital derivatives are required with the application and use of modern information and communication technologies, the use of valid and internationally recognized protocols and methods of scientific documentation, as well as the “filtering” of the information provided to the public through the approach of interpretive museology, so that it becomes attractive and educationally offered through various means.
Finally, the results of the project will constitute a multifaceted digital coupling of the exhibition spaces and monuments with their artistic-cultural background, history, and vibrant urban and tourist life of the island.
