The Samaria Gorge, one of the most popular natural attractions in Crete, will remain closed on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, due to the extreme temperatures expected in the area.
According to an announcement by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (O.F.Y.PE.K.A.), the decision was taken as a precaution, following the EMY forecast forecast that predicts temperatures of up to 37°C in Samaria and 38°C in Agia Roumeli. These values exceed the permitted limits set by the Sub-Region of Crete for the operation of the National Park.
The suspension of operation applies to all entrances to the gorge, with the aim of protecting the health and safety of visitors, ranger staff, and animals used for transportation on the trail.
OFYPEKA will make a further announcement tomorrow, Wednesday, depending on the update of meteorological data.
In the meantime, travelers who were planning to hike in Samaria are advised to adjust their schedule and choose alternative routes or points of interest inland or in coastal areas with milder conditions.
