The Samaria Gorge visitor season has ended, with a total of 119,138 visitors, according to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA). The Gorge remained open for 151 days, offering visitors a unique experience of natural beauty this year, in the “heart” of the White Mountains National Park.
At this point, it should be emphasized that Samaria remains one of the most important ecotourism centers in the country, attracting tens of thousands of hikers from all over the world every year, who choose Crete for its natural authenticity and the biodiversity it hosts.
At the same time, OFYPEKA announced that maintenance and repair works on the visitor infrastructure will begin in the coming period, in collaboration with the competent bodies. The interventions will focus on visitor safety and the improvement of crossing points, with the aim of a timely and smooth resumption of the Park’s operation in the spring of 2026, weather conditions permitting.
It is worth noting that the Samaria Gorge, approximately 16 kilometers long, is a protected area of ??the Natura 2000 Network and a symbol of Crete’s natural heritage, substantially contributing to shaping its profile as a destination for sustainable and quality tourism.
