Royal Caribbean underlines its intention to strengthen its relations with Santorini and contribute substantially to the local community, responding to the municipality of Thira on the occasion of the public debate it has opened regarding the presence and activities of cruise companies on the island.
The company states that its priority is “to further strengthen the long-standing partnerships we have with local non-profit organizations that work to protect the seas – through educational seminars on ocean conservation, through beach cleanups and guided tours of local schools.”
At this point, it should be emphasized that Royal Caribbean also talks about hiring island residents, noting that “local expertise will be crucial in creating a team of talented and skilled individuals who will offer a world-class experience to guests.”
A company spokesperson points out that the goal is to work closely with the municipality of Thira, local authorities and residents to protect the island’s natural beauty and promote sustainable practices. “We want to work together with the municipality, with community groups and with residents to preserve the natural beauty of Santorini for generations to come. We look forward to being an active member of this community and believe that there is a bright future ahead of us, for everyone,” it is stated.
It is worth noting that Royal Caribbean’s position follows the recent public statement by the Municipality of Thira, in which it expressed its strong opposition to the creation of private or closed tourist zones in Santorini, exclusively for cruise company visitors.
The Municipality of Thira had pointed out in a statement yesterday that “Santorini is a public and living place, which cannot be turned into a private destination for a few.” It also underlined that the establishment of any form of “private village” harms the local economy, creates social inequalities and alters the cultural, social and economic fabric of the island, stressing that such proposals are not consistent with the public character and authenticity of Santorini.
