Greek main opposition New Democracy Tourism Sector head Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas and his Shipping and Island Policy counterpart Lasithi MP John Plakiotakis visited yesterday, on December 27, the Presidents of the Greek Marinas and Greek Yacht Owners Associations Stavros Katsikadis and Anthony Stelliatos and discussed with them about the key issues facing Marine Tourism in Greece.
After the meeting, the two men commented: “We had an interesting meeting with two important stakeholders of marine tourism and we were informed about critical issues facing the industry. We shared the anguish and concerns of Mr. Katsikadis and Stelliatos who highlighted to us the dangers to be faced by marine tourism from a possible tax increase in yachting. We expressed the position of New Democracy, which is utterly opposed to any fragmentary tax increases without development measures for the recovery of the sector. Furthermore, we are opposed to any measure that affects workers and bodies of shipping and marine tourism. At a time when the economic crisis has irretrievably damaged the industry of marine tourism, causing high unemployment among yachting professionals and the refugee crisis has caused a reduction of moorings in most marinas across Greece, we consider such a policy criminal. It is a policy that fatally affects the country’s heavy industry of tourism and shows the damage that has been caused to our homeland by the experiments and obsessions of Mr. Tsipras and the Syriza-ANEL coalition government.“
