Turkey | New Marina in Demre, 2 Million Cruise Passengers Expected in 2025

Turkey is rapidly solidifying its position as a top destination for international yacht tourism, emphasized the country’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uralo?lu, on the occasion of the inauguration of the new marina in Demre.

The new marina adds 700 berths to the national network, bringing Turkey’s total capacity to nearly 26,000 berths for tourist vessels.

“Turkey is quickly establishing itself as a leading destination for international maritime tourism,” stated Mr. Uralo?lu, highlighting the strategic importance of the investments made since 2002.

From 41 to 64 marinas in two decades

The country has dramatically expanded its marina network—from 41 marinas in 2002 to 64 fully operational facilities today, spanning from Yalova to Seferihisar, from the ?e?me Peninsula to Didim, and from Mersin to Ka?.

The development continues with ongoing projects such as the marinas in Dat?a, Tekirda?, and Hali? in Istanbul, which are expected to further increase capacity and regional coverage.

In Mersin, the Aydincik Marina project has already completed its basic infrastructure phase, while the above-ground facilities will be developed through a public-private partnership, enhancing the region’s tourism offering.

In Antalya, the Alanya, Ka?, and Gazipa?a marinas are already operational, reinforcing the region’s central role in maritime tourism.

Strong momentum in cruise tourism as well

The minister also spoke extensively about the growing strength of the cruise sector, noting that in 2024, Turkey welcomed 1,195 cruise ships and 1.9 million passengers, marking a 22.5% increase in passenger traffic compared to 2023.

This upward trend continues into 2025, with the first half of the year recording 490 ship arrivals and 732,302 passengers—representing an increase of 18% and 27.5%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2024.

According to Mr. Uralo?lu, projections suggest that by the end of 2025, the number of cruise passengers in Turkey will exceed 2 million.

Strategy focused on accessibility and private investment

Turkey’s overall strategy for developing maritime tourism is based on a combination of public infrastructure investment and incentives to attract private capital. At the same time, particular emphasis is placed on the geographic distribution of marinas to ensure all coastal regions are covered.

The ongoing investments and creation of modern port facilities are making Turkey an emerging force in Eastern Mediterranean maritime tourism—at a time when the sector is experiencing a global resurgence.
