Crete in 12 recommended European destinations for January holidays

Crete is at the center of international media attention as a holiday destination for 2026 outside the high season. The travel platform Going.com published a survey of the most suitable European destinations for warm travel experiences in January.

The Going.com list features regions from both the island and mainland Mediterranean, such as Andalusia, Costa del Sol, the Canary Islands, Cyprus, Malta, Sicily, the Algarve, Madeira, Southern France, Southern Italy, and Antalya. Crete ranks 4th among the ideal Mediterranean island destinations.

According to the platform’s expert team, “Crete’s southern location grants it some of the best winter weather in Greece, with temperatures remaining exceptionally mild. Its mountain villages remain warm and welcoming, while coastal areas are bathed in sunlight. At the same time, the destination’s archaeological sites are almost empty, in stark contrast to the summer tourist crowds. January in Crete offers an authentic glimpse into life on the Greek islands. Families can enjoy local cuisine, coastal routes, and gentle hiking without the intense Mediterranean heat.”

This is not the first time Crete has been highlighted as a four-season destination by international media and platforms. In previous years, major international networks and travel publications such as CNN Travel, The Guardian, and National Geographic have featured the island in Mediterranean winter getaway guides, emphasizing its mild climate, authentic everyday life, local gastronomy, and opportunities for gentle activities outside the high season. In any case, this new recognition from Going.com reinforces Crete’s consistent appeal as a destination that extends beyond the summer months.
