Kalamata, Elefsina and Rhodes were shortlisted on Friday in the competition for the title of European Capital of Culture 2021 in Greece.
The recommendation was done by a panel of independent experts evaluating applications from 14 competing Greek cities at the outcome of a 4-day meeting in Athens, between 22 and 26 February 2016, at the TITANIA hotel, under the auspices of the Culture Ministry’s Department of International Relations and EU Affairs.
The three cities are invited to submit an updated application package after relevant recommendations by experts, to participate in the selection meeting for the European Capital of Culture 2021, which will take place in November 2016.
Being shortlisted for the title can result in significant cultural, economic and social benefits for the cities concerned, as long as their bid is part of a longer-term culture-led development strategy.
