Ministry of Culture: Agreement for the revival of the art of stone

A Programmatic Agreement for Cultural Development was signed between the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Western Macedonia, the Region of Peloponnese, and the University of Western Macedonia.

The aim is to prepare a research project for the development of a curriculum and educational material, in order to establish and operate professional apprenticeship schools in the traditional art of stone in Pentalofos, Voio, Kozani and in Lagadia, Gortynia.

Need to preserve the art of stonemasons

The research program aims to revive and promote the traditional building art in the two Regions. The creation of apprenticeship schools is considered necessary due to the lack of specialized craftsmen. The art of stonemasons is registered in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Funding and schedule

The project, with a budget of 400,000 euros and a duration of two years, is financed by the Ministry of Culture and the Regions of Peloponnese and Western Macedonia.

Statements by the Minister of Culture

The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, underlined that the revival of traditional arts is a priority, with the aim of creating a sustainable development model and strengthening the sector. She stressed the importance of vocational training, business support and international networking, contributing to addressing the demographic problem and preserving the Greek cultural identity.

Regional Governors’ Positions

The Regional Governor of Peloponnese, Dimitris Ptochos, described the agreement as a significant investment in education and cultural heritage, noting that the project will provide professional opportunities and keep alive the art of the Lagkadia stonemasons.

The Regional Governor of Western Macedonia, Giorgos Amanatidis, stated that the Stone School in Pentalofos, Voio will enhance the cultural heritage of the region, connecting graduates with restoration and enhancement projects of the architectural heritage.

Historical significance of stone art

The stonemasons’ villages of the Municipality of Voio, known as ‘Zoupania’, and Lagkadia, Gortynia, are historical centers of stone art in Greece, with structures extending to the Balkans and beyond. In these villages, the art is transmitted from the master craftsmen to the younger craftsmen through practical training.

The role of the new schools

The operation of the Petra Schools will contribute to the specialized restoration of listed buildings and public works, ensuring the continuation of the tradition. At the same time, they will be a magnet for young craftsmen, who will obtain professional certification and employment opportunities in the sector.

This initiative strengthens the local economy, preserves cultural heritage, and creates development prospects for future generations.
