The tourism organizations of Crete express their deep appreciation and sincere congratulations to the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, on the occasion of the historic inclusion of the Minoan Palatial Centers in the UNESCO World Heritage List. As they point out, this is a nationally significant success, which confirms the global influence of the Minoan Culture internationally and substantially strengthens the international image of Crete as a leading cultural and tourist destination.
In their joint message, the organizations emphasize that UNESCO’s decision is “the highest honor for Greek culture” and at the same time the vindication of a long, arduous, and systematic effort by the State and the Ministry of Culture. As noted, the role of Mrs. Mendoni was decisive; she, with her political guidance, contributed decisively to the successful outcome of the process.
“The inclusion of the Minoan Palatial Centers in the World Heritage Sites constitutes international recognition of the uniqueness and timeless value of the Minoan Civilization, which is a cornerstone of the European cultural identity,” they state characteristically.
For Crete, as they note, this development has multiple implications – not only symbolic, but also developmental. The emergence of the Minoan centers as monuments of global importance decisively strengthens the cultural footprint of the island and creates new prospects for the development of thematic, quality, and sustainable tourism. This is, as they emphasize, a strategic axis of development that will benefit the local society, the economy, and Greek tourism itself.
The tourism operators express their commitment to contribute actively to the continuous promotion and protection of the archaeological sites of Crete and especially the Minoan Palace Centers, through their international collaborations and promotion networks. At the same time, they call on the State to continue its work decisively, with interventions that will ensure the preservation, promotion, and sustainable use of the monuments.
Specifically, they call for the strengthening of infrastructure, the improvement of visitor numbers, and the creation of a comprehensive framework of experience for the visitor, which will reflect the importance and symbolism of these unique cultural treasures.
The inclusion of the Minoan Palace Centers in UNESCO constitutes, as it is pointed out, an important crossroads for the culture and tourism of Crete, and can function as a lever for sustainable development if combined with targeted policies, synergies and international promotion.
Crete, the organizations conclude, possesses not only a great cultural wealth, but also the experience and the will to highlight it on the international stage, as an integral part of a modern, qualitative and culturally focused tourist identity.
