The Municipal Committee of the Municipality of Syros – Ermoupolis proposed to the municipal council the determination of the cultural and tourism fee for 2026.
According to the Municipality, the cultural and tourism fee is imposed due to the uniqueness of the architectural and cultural monuments and settlements of the island of Syros, as well as the increased tourist traffic. Under Presidential Decree 899/1976, Syros has been declared a tourist destination. According to the Municipality, these characteristics increase the needs, and consequently the costs, for interventions and actions to support, maintain, and develop the cultural and tourism identity of the island. The projects and actions that correspond to the revenue from this fee are specific, planned each year through decisions of the municipal council, following active participation and consultation with representatives of the local community, and receive all approvals required by the relevant legislation. The Municipality notes that these projects and actions refer to certain groups of citizens, and the benefit from these fees concerns the improvement of quality of life and the development of the area.
Specifically, the Municipal Committee proposed maintaining the Cultural Fee at a single rate for all residences and business premises of €0.10 per square meter, and the Tourism Fee at a single rate for business premises of €0.23 per square meter. For residences, there are some exemptions for specific categories of citizens.
Regarding professional use, industries and uncovered spaces are exempt from paying the Cultural and Tourism Fee.
Additionally, for covered business premises larger than 1,000 sq.m and up to 6,000 sq.m, a reduced area of 50% is applied. For covered business premises larger than 6,000 sq.m, a reduced general-use coefficient of 60% per sq.m of the standard rate for professional-use premises up to 1,000 sq.m is applied, according to the category/zone of the property.
Recently, Tornos News revealed the fees for the Cultural and Tourism Promotion Fee for 2026 in Paros. In that case, the Cultural Fee has been set at €0.37 per sq.m of property, and the Tourism Promotion Fee at €0.33 per sq.m of general-use business premises.
