The new increase in the magnitude of seismic vibrations in Santorini-Amorgos, with 4.7 and 4.9 a moment ago, confirms that we are in an intense seismic sequence.
This is pointed out by seismologist Mr. Gerasimos Papadopoulos in his post, emphasizing that such sequences can last up to about 4 months, referring to the case of Arkalochori in 2021.
As Mr. Papadopoulos in his commentary, “I will not be tempted to say the size of the expected main earthquake. I will do so only when I can scientifically base such an estimate. The volcanic activity is unfounded.”
The seismic activity began on January 24, but since Saturday morning the seismic activity, both in number of earthquakes and in magnitudes, has increased greatly. The earthquakes have exceeded 400 recorded.
As Mr. Papadopoulos mentioned in a morning show, there are going to be foreshocks and there is a high probability that there will be a large 5.5 and 6 Richter.
The earthquakes are the result of the activation of a 30-kilometer-long zone, which starts from the NE of Santorini, a sea area, and continues towards Amorgos, that is, it develops into a sea area. That is why there is a “safety distance”, of approximately 30-40 km. away from Amorgos, Santorini, Anafi, and Astypalaia, as he emphasized.
As Mr. Papadopoulos said, if there is an earthquake of more than 6 on the Richter scale, there is a possibility of a tsunami. That is why instructions were given to those who are in a coastal area at the time of a strong seismic tremor, to immediately move inland.
