World Environment Day: 50 actions from Evros to the Dodecanese
Greece is actively participating in the global celebration of World Environment Day today, June 5, with more than 50 events and actions in protected areas from Evros to the Dodecanese.

With the slogan “Beat Plastic Pollution” and with the participation of 150 countries, this year’s World Environment Day focuses on the need for immediate and collective action against one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time.

According to data from the UN Environment Programme, annual plastic production exceeds 430 million tons worldwide, with over two-thirds destined for short-term use products, which quickly end up in waste, irreparably burdening ecosystems.

In Greece, the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) is coordinating the celebration, with a broad program of more than 50 environmental awareness actions across the country — from Epirus and Prespa to Rhodope and Evros, from Attica to the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, and the Dodecanese.

The events include nature hikes, guided tours, educational games, volunteer clean-ups, information days and activities for all ages, inviting citizens to actively participate and discover the value of protecting the country’s natural wealth.

The actions began on May 28 and will last until June 17, 2025, transforming World Environment Day into a multi-day celebration of knowledge, cooperation, and respect for the environment.
