The Municipality of Kalavryta is implementing measures to prevent water scarcity and possible water shortages during the summer season, as, as it states, the phenomenon is starting to be felt in the region, causing reasonable concern.
The action plan includes:
Informing and raising awareness among citizens about the need for rational use of water, both in water supply and in other uses (irrigation, agricultural and professional activities, recreation). Information will be provided through every available means, such as announcements, information interventions, and awareness campaigns.
Strict implementation of the Water Supply Regulation in all Municipal Units, without exception. The control will be exercised by the competent deputy mayors, the Local Councils, and the presidents of the Municipal Communities, who will also undertake the monitoring of the water meters, in collaboration with municipal employees.
Immediate maintenance, control, and repair of leaks and damage to the water supply networks, under the responsibility of the local authorities and supported by the Technical Service of the Municipality.
Informing farmers and livestock breeders, in order to avoid the use of drinking water for irrigation or other uses, which is expressly prohibited. The adaptation of crops and activities to practices of limited water consumption is also encouraged, provided that alternatives are available.
Timely adoption of appropriate preventive measures in case of identified insufficiency. In areas where reduced supply is recorded, garden irrigation will be interrupted, strict consumption control will be implemented, as well as a planned interruption of water supply during the night hours to maintain an adequate amount of water in the tanks.
The Municipality calls on citizens to actively contribute to the joint effort to manage the increasingly pressing phenomenon of water shortage, proposing collective responsibility for safeguarding the precious natural resource. At the same time, the municipal authority is also examining additional initiatives that will enhance the resilience of the water supply network and raise awareness among the local community, with a view to the long-term sustainability of water supply in the area.
