- With the aim of preserving and highlighting the unique natural heritage of Sfakia, the Municipality of Sfakia successfully completed maintenance work on one of the most impressive and popular sections of the European Trail E4, which connects Lykos with Marmara along the steep southern coast of Crete.
The interventions were deemed necessary following serious damage caused mainly to the steps of the trail due to intense natural phenomena, endangering the safety of hikers.
The project included the complete reconstruction of the damaged steps as well as the installation of wire ropes and chains at key points along the route, enhancing the protection and comfort of visitors. The path is now fully accessible, safer, and ready to welcome nature lovers and hikers from Greece and abroad again.
The E4, one of the most emblematic paths in Europe, is a reference point for alternative tourism and hiking enthusiasts. This section, which connects the isolated Lykos – accessible only by sea or on foot – with the imposing Marmaras near Agia Roumeli, offers unparalleled views of the Libyan Sea and highlights the wild, authentic beauty of the Sfakian landscape.
The Municipality’s initiative is part of a strategic plan for sustainable tourism development based on respect for the environment, the promotion of natural wealth, and the provision of a quality experience for visitors.
With the new interventions, the Municipality of Sfakion further strengthens the region’s position as a destination for quality, gentle, and experiential tourism, keeping alive the connection between man and nature.
