Ioannina: Hoteliers demand delivery of the Kalambaka – Mourgani road section before Christmas

The Hoteliers’ Association of Ioannina Prefecture has written a letter to the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport requesting the delivery of the completed Kalambaka – Mourgani section of the northern axis of the E65 before Christmas. The letter emphasizes the importance of this specific project as well as the benefits expected from its timely partial delivery.

As initially noted, the progress of the works on the northern section of the E65 has exceeded 86% and this section will provide a solution to the chronic interconnection problems between Western Macedonia, Thessaly and Epirus. In the above areas, in fact, are some of the most touristic winter destinations in the country with thousands of visitors traveling to and from them, while in the Prefecture of Ioannina, the occupancy rate in accommodations during the festive season is close to absolute.

Nevertheless, as it is emphasized, the road network connecting Kalambaka with the Egnatia Motorway is old and outdated, with travel being not only time-consuming but also dangerous. The letter also states that 65 of the 75 total kilometers of the Patras-Pyrgos highway were initially put into circulation and the rest will be delivered at the end of November, thus facilitating the travel of citizens and visitors.

Based on all of the above, EXNI asks the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to ensure the delivery of the completed Kalambaka – Mourgani section of the northern axis of the E65, in order to encourage and safely serve travel in our regions during the holiday season. “Given that the completion and delivery of the project will take place in the 2nd quarter of 2026, we believe that such a prospect is feasible, thus serving the increased traffic expected in our regions,” it is noted.

The letter concludes by emphasizing the importance of winter tourism for the local communities of mainland Greece and asks the government to show the corresponding importance it gives to summer tourism.
